Class Description
It is generally known that the LGBTQ+ community face addiction at higher rates than the general population. This class will provide participants with a richer understanding of LGBTQ+ individuals (including basic knowledge of identities and terms) with the goal to build LGBTQ+ cultural competency. The class provides empirical research to understand healthcare barriers, mental health, addiction, and gambling behavior/risk. The class includes practical advice for working with LGBT+ clients with activities as well as plenty of time for questions & answers. Participants will learn how to use LGBTQ+ cultural competency tools to best work with LGBTQ clients and their families.
Learning Objectives
- To be able to recognize at least 4 issues that result in potential minority stress among LGBTQ+ individuals
- To be able to identify 5 reasons LGBTQ+ individuals may engage in gambling
- To identify 9 ways to competently work with LGBTQ+ clients
- To identify 6 ways to create a welcoming practice for LGBTQ+ clients
Educational Goals
- Provide an overview of why practitioners need LGBTQ+ cultural competency
- Understand the key terminology and identities within the LGBTQ+ community
- Be familiar with the research and statistics around addiction issues with LGBTQ+ individuals
- Understand why LGBTQ+ individuals may gamble
- Provide a review of the most up-to-date literature regarding LGBTQ+ and gambling behavior and risk for gambling disorder, including results from ongoing research
- Be familiar with the relationship between video gaming and gambling and why LGBTQ+ individuals may be at greater risk
- Provide advice for working with LGBTQ+ clients
