Class Description

This class explores the intersection of gambling and the brain by analyzing the neurobiology, genetics, and neurochemistry of gambling disorder. Participants will gain insight into how impulsivity, compulsivity, and cognitive functions are influenced by gambling behaviors. Additionally, the class will review practical assessment tools, treatment approaches, and current research in the field to better understand and address gambling disorder.

Learning Objectives

Identify at least three key neurobiological factors associated with gambling disorder and explain their implications for treatment
Describe two genetic studies that highlight the heritability of gambling disorder and its links to other psychiatric conditions
Use a case study to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy in addressing gambling-related impulsivity and compulsivity
